Calderdale Royal Hospital

Our plans for Calderdale Royal Hospital

Our plans for Calderdale Royal Hospital, include a new clinical building and multi-storey care park. By 2029 our unplanned (acute) services will be located here.

Clinical build

The new clinical building at Calderdale Royal Hospital will have a new A&E with a dedicated Children’s A&E department and additional wards.

The design of the new clinical building honours the important heritage of the town and is in keeping with the local area. There are also plans to promote biodiversity in the design, making sure the building is sustainable and environmentally fit for the future

The new building will be the same scale as the existing buildings and, as the images show the colour of the materials has been specially selected to match the current hospital buildings.

The new clinical building will have a screen of established trees alongside the roadside and easy access off Godfrey Road. It will be linked to the existing hospital building and the design also incorporates inner courtyard areas offering a light and airy inner core to the building.

Due for completion in 2029, the new clinical building will have:

  • 24/7 A&E and clinical decision unit
  • 24/7 urgent care centre
  • 24/7 anaesthetic cover
  • paediatric emergency centre
  • diagnostics
  • critical care unit
  • inpatient paediatrics (medical and surgical care)
  • outpatient services and therapies
  • obstetrics and midwife led maternity care
  • acute inpatient medical admissions and care (e.g. respiratory, stroke, cardiology)
  • acute emergency and complex surgery services

Multi-storey car park

The new multi-storey car park at Calderdale Royal Hospital is due for completion in summer 2026, and will make a big difference to our patients, visitors and colleagues.

It will give an extra 400 extra parking spaces. Once completed there will be more than 800 parking spaces in total at Calderdale Royal Hospital, which includes the other car parks on site. Included in the plans are electric car charging points, extra blue badge spaces, cycle parking facilities and 24/7 CCTV.

The car park will be located at the front of the current hospital on Dryclough Lane, will co-exist alongside the existing established trees on the site and provide easy and direct access to the main building for both car users and pedestrians.

As a commitment to honouring the important heritage of the town, the design of the car park compliments notable buildings which distinctly link to Halifax’s rich history and includes a specially designed façade in keeping with the local area.

Ahead of construction, work has taken place to make sure the landscaping around the car park has a positive impact on the local environment. Biodiversity has been promoted in the design, including a significant increase in hedgerows and habitats for wildlife to thrive.

The landmark designs with landscaped surrounding areas on site will offer the very best experience for our patients and visitors. The new car park will be the same scale as the existing buildings and, as the images show, the colour of the materials has been specially selected to match the current hospital buildings.

Twin Catheter Lab and Cardiology Day Case unit

A new purpose-built cardiology day case unit and two new Catheter labs will be built within the existing cardiology department and adjacent clinical space on the ground floor of Calderdale Royal Hospital. The work is due to start at the end of 2025 and is expected to be completed in summer 2026.

A catheter lab is an examination room with diagnostic imaging equipment used to diagnose and treat specific cardiac conditions. A catheter lab is where tests and procedures including angiogram, percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and implantation of pacemakers, internal cardiac defibrillators (ICDs) and cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) devices are carried out. A catheter lab is staffed with a multidisciplinary team including a cardiologist, nurses, a radiographer, and a physiologist.

At the moment, there is one catheter lab in the Radiology Department, and a pacing suite based on the Coronary Care Unit (CCU).

By replacing these with the new catheter labs, we will have a more efficient, futureproof service. The catheter labs, day case unit and Cardiology department will all be in the same area of the hospital on the ground floor.

Patients will be able to recover post procedure from the catheter lab until discharge, for planned treatment and/or investigations, which means they may not need an inpatient admission.

The cardiology clinical team, and patients who use Cardiology services have shared their views about their experiences and the proposed plans.

Learning and Development Centre

Our new Learning Centre

We opened our new Learning Centre, located on Dryclough Lane, Halifax in February 2025.

The two storey, flat-roofed building has been designed to complement the surrounding area and includes a solar panel system to provide a sustainable electricity source, as part of our aim to deliver an energy efficient building.

The centre is a hub for our colleagues to learn, grow and develop. It has a new clinical simulation suite where a wide range of healthcare professionals can be trained and practise realistic scenarios and hone new skills. There are also flexible and interactive education and teaching spaces for team and individual learning, breakout areas, as well as a new library. The Learning Centre also provides training opportunities for healthcare students.

Rainbow Child Development Centre

The Rainbow Hub

The Rainbow Hub, based in the Clock House, on the Rosemount Estate, Elland, is a purpose-designed facility for local children from across Calderdale and Huddersfield with complex care conditions.

In April 2023, it became the home of the Rainbow Child Development Unit, previously located at Calderdale Royal Hospital.

The centre provides clinics, therapies and treatments and is also the base for nursing teams specialising in children’s community, diabetes and epilepsy care, bringing services together under one roof.

The facility includes the very latest technology, funded partly through the Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Charity, including a state-of-the-art sensory room, moving ‘floorscapes’ in reception, which change to touch, and moving ‘ceilingscapes’ in treatment rooms, on which parents can upload family videos from their phones for children to watch.

There is also a large soft play area with indoor swing and a changing places area with an accessible shower and changing facilities.

Families were a big part of the design of the Rainbow Hub. You can read feedback and about the opening of the hub here: Wheelchair World Cup rugby star Rob Hawkins opens our new children’s community health hub in Elland
